Our History
The GrandView first opened its doors in 1884 as a hotel and tavern, serving travelers on the Mt. Hamilton Stage Coach route between San Jose and the James Lick Observatory. When the stage line was motorized in 1917, the house closed its doors for a time. It reopened in 1934 and thrived as a local tavern until a windy day in February 1942, when a fire destroyed the building as forestry crews looked on helplessly. The GrandView was rebuilt on the same site, then relocated across the street in 1954. Sadly, another fire struck on November 7, 1956, claiming a cherished collection of antiques and relics. Within a year, a new building rose in its place, reopening as the GrandView Restaurant. For over four decades, Lucy and Nino lovingly ran the restaurant, becoming part of the local legacy before passing the torch to the Carrubba brothers, Giuseppe and Maurizio, in May 2014. Originally from Sicily, the brothers recognized the GrandView’s deep connection to the community and dedicated themselves to its revival.
